Ottar is on the loose- Weekend Writing Warriors 4-10-16

Ottar is on the loose! Weekend Writing Warrior snippet. My pre-order link is below, too.

Every weekend a wonderful blog hop happens where the Weekend Writing Warriors share creative snippets of their stories. Click on the link above to visit the other bloggers. Like our posts, share our posts, and leave a comment if you’re of a mind to.

Here is the set-up for this week's excerpt. It is edited to fit the 10 sentence rule.River's friend and colleague Ottar is helping him track down the Gnome and Jersey Devil. It's dark and Ottar is Jet lagged so he mistakes a life-size dinosaur statue for a cryptid. Oh and yes, he's an Australian.

"Bloody hell." Ottar raised his gun a second time.

River placed his hand on the barrel and lowered it. "You just shot a dinosaur statue. I think you’ve been out in the field too long, you crazy bastard."
Ottar lifted his left palm. "Crikey, who in their right mind has a brachiosaurs in their front yard?"
"That would be Pepper and I can’t wait to hear you explain why you shot her sculpture with a tranq gun."
"Yeah, well, she must have a few wallabies loose in the upstairs paddock." He pointed to the side of his head and made a circle with his finger.

Bad luck magnet Abby Fitzpatrick gets fired, catches her boyfriend cheating with a mime, and is cursed by an evil genie who pops out of a tampon box. She’s bound and determined to remove the spell, and as fate would have it, the hottest guy she’s ever met is out to kill her.

River Stone, a Cryptid hunter for Legends and Myths Police Squad (L.A.M.P.S.), poses as sheriff for Abby’s hometown of Haber Cove, New Jersey. He’s out to find and capture a man-eating gnome and bag the legendary Jersey Devil monster. Little does he realize, the woman who catches his heart is the same creature that he was sent to destroy.

Tempting the Light is the first completed novel in the L.A.M.P.S. series that features hunky secret agents who find true love while hunting and slaying dangerous Cryptids.

  1. Why would he shoot a statue? I'm guessing he feared it was one of the creatures he's supposed to be hunting.

  2. Hey Cara,
They are Cryptid hunters and hunt monsters. Ottar is used to shooting large lurking beasts. It was dark and he was jet lagged.
Thanks for commenting. I'll add this in the set up.

  3. At least it was a trank gun - he shouldn't have damaged it too badly! I have sympathy with him - when you're up against dangerous monsters, far safer to shoot the odd statue than to fail to nobble a ferocious horror.

  4. A few wallabies loose in the upstairs paddock... That has to be the best I have ever heard. Excellent dialogue, Bonnie

  7. LMAO - love it - even more funny I read it as OttEr - as in the animal then I saw the dinosaur - I went back and re-read - made way more sense- thinking I might need more caffeine today. Tweeted.

  9. I agree with Teresa. Your word choice makes the scene come alive. River was extremely lucky, though, not to get burned by touching the barrel of a rifle that was just fired.

  10. Not sure if it was the intent, but I thought that was a hilarious scene...shooting a statue. Hee hee...good stuff.

  11. Great scene! And I agree with Otter. Why in the heck does she have a dinosaur in her front yard? (I mean, if I could, I would, but...)
